Sanibel Real Estate
Sanibel is the best known of the 100 Southwest Florida barrier islands. Conde Nast readers recently voted Sanibel one of the “Best North American Islands." Coastal Living Magazine also recently named Sanibel the "top shelling beach in the United States."
Sanibel offers the slow pace of island life with a mix of unique shops, galleries, theater and restaurants along its famed Periwinkle Way. Visitors are attracted by the unspoiled coastline and mild waters that invite swimming year-round. Sanibel’s white pristine beaches, located on the southern shores, yield more than 200 varieties of shells, giving name to the “Sanibel Stoop,” the posture associated with shell-collecting. The “Causeway Beaches” are beloved by families for picnicking, swimming, fishing and even windsurfing in a casual and relaxed setting. Read more about Sanibel real estate.

Protecting Sanibel
Sanibel Island is one of the few places where one can experience Florida in its natural state. Located on the south western coast of the Florida Peninsula, Sanibel Island is a natural refuge for a wide variety of marine life. Restrictions on development in Sanibel Island protect this barrier island, a natural haven for many of the state’s native flora and fauna. Formed some six thousand years ago by the constant flow of ocean waves, its sandy shoreline, worn smooth with the help of time, contrasts the tall palm trees and gnarls of mangroves that shape the island’s interior. Perhaps it is this landscape that dictates the peace and tranquility felt. As my guests always note, to swim with a manatee or be greeted by a heron each day is not uncommon.
First inhabited 2,500 years ago, Sanibel Island has been slow to develop and not without intension. Today, residents enjoy the richness of the island while working to protect its natural wonders. Building and development along the shore and within the island is heavily restricted, unlike many of Florida’s other coastal cities. There is a three-story height limit for all development and sixty percent of the island is protected as undeveloped park or refuge land.
Sanibel Wildlife
Sanibel is home to a large variety of Florida wildlife, including rare birds, alligators, and dolphins. The world-renowned J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge attracts naturalists and budding wildlife enthusiasts, providing visitors with the opportunity to see exotic birds and animals in their natural habitat. This refuge is the largest in the American South and is home to hundreds of unique species.
Sanibel Recreation
Besides shelling and wildlife, Sanibel offers 27 miles of protected bike paths, kayaking and deep sea fishing through pristine waters of Pine Island Sound and the Gulf. Sunset cruises, island hopping and dolphin excursions appeal to the romantic at heart.
