Why Sanibel is Perfect for Raising Kids

While Sanibel Island is a great place for those of all ages to see and explore, it’s a perfect location for raising kids. Not only is it popular for its award-winning beaches, but it’s simply a fantastic place for young minds to explore.

After all, the natural setting serves up an ideal location for learning about nature and science. This barrier island has a unique ecosystem, with much of it preserved due to the efforts of the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation. As Sanibel’s largest private landowner, the foundation manages more than 1,000-acres of island nature preserve.

A portion of the largest undeveloped mangrove system in the entire nation sits within the JN Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island. Many migratory birds come to nest and roost on the island, as it provides a home for more than 200 different species of birds.

Of course, Sanibel Island’s popularity is often linked to its beaches. The island contains five beaches, presenting plenty of family-friendly fun, particularly when it comes to shelling. The nearly year-round sunshine and blue skies provide even more opportunities for fun out on the sand and water.

The island also functions much as a small town, with a unique flavor that invites annual celebrations, including parades and other family activities. There’s also plenty of fun when it comes to the arts too, like the quality education and entertainment programs presented by Big Arts Sanibel Island.

It doesn’t hurt either that The Sanibel School is a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. The award-winning school ranks as one of the best schools in Lee County and throughout the entire State of Florida.

For afterschool fun, there’s the popular Sanibel Rec Center, the Sanibel Pubic Library, or the many planned events and activities made possible by the Sanibel Community House.
