The Fort Undergoing Renovations

For the first time in its 100-year history, major renovations to the Fort Myers Country Club started in April and is undergoing a $5.8 million renovation to fix “The Fort’s” drainage problems. The drainage issue is especially bad in the summer when rain is heavy and this sometimes closes the famed golf course. The course is one of Fort Myers’ finest historical features and is located in historic Old Fort Myers on McGregor Boulevard. The Fort Myers Country Club will re-open in 7 months on November 1. One of the 5 oldest golf courses in Southwest Florida, the Fort Myers Country Club opened in 1917. The 130-acre course is owned by the city and widely known as one that allows golfers to walk it all year-round (courses now almost all require a golf cart). A team led by Wright Construction is overseeing the renovation of the entire public golf course including the fairways, the putting greens, roughs, sand traps and the bunkers. The project includes construction of a storm water detention/retention basin. A new irrigation and drainage system will be installed. The character and challenge of the course will remain close to the original layout of the Donald Ross-designed course.
