The Kinzie name comes from the Kinzie Family, who operated the ferry line beginning in 1904 that connected Sanibel Island with the mainland before the causeway. It all started when brothers George and Andrew Kinzie started ferrying passengers down the Caloosahatchee River to the islands. For a period of time, the ferry became a sea-going school bus for island children who spent 4 to 4 ½ hours being transported to school in Fort Myers.
