Cabbage Key- One of the Coolest Hidden Places in Florida

There are a lot of fun places to go in Florida, but one of the coolest might just be Cabbage Key. This almost hidden island sits off the coast of Southwest Florida, and virtually overflows with Old Florida-style appeal.

Unlike more developed communities in Southwest Florida, you won’t find a single car on the island or even a paved road. In fact, the only way to reach the island of Cabbage Key is by seaplane or boat. You can also take a water taxi from nearby Pine Island.

Named to pay homage to the cabbage palm trees that grow on the island, the mostly undeveloped, 100-acre island is a great place to go for the day or for an overnight trip. While there, you’ll want to take time to check out some of the island’s nature trails, take in views of area wildlife and, if you can, catch a sunset over Pine Island Sound.

You can also pass the time shelling, fishing, boating or just relaxing on one of the naturally secluded beaches. If fishing is your sport, or even just occupies your leisure time, you’ll find some of the best fishing in the waters off Cabbage Key.

The island often attracts anglers from all around the world. You’ll also find other possibilities for water recreation, including kayaking, canoeing and paddle-boarding.

Choose to stay in a charming inn for a relaxing getaway or a romantic cottage. You won’t find many high-tech diversions on the island, but you will find a fantastic location to get away from it all.

For a fun dining experience, be sure to check out the Cabbage Key restaurant and bar. The open-air restaurant serves up three meals a day all year long. While you’re there, be sure to tape a dollar bill to the bar to mark your visit.
