A multi-million dollar upgrade to Alico Arena just added on more than 11,000 additional square feet to the site. The upgrades translate to improvements to the sports medicine area, opened up room for a committed academic center, plus added on more meeting space, office space and a new film room to the arena on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University. The $4.5 million project’s most visible offering includes the sports medicine area and the academic center on the building’s first level. More space was also added on to the third level of the building to make it more functional to the needs of the university. Both the men and women’s basketball coaches now have identical offices in the basketball wing, while a new theater-style film room provides seating for two-dozen people. The academic center of the arena includes room for office space, a central study area and space for tutoring rooms. Meanwhile, the greatly expanded sports medicine area now offers plenty of upgrades as well, including cold and hot tubs, plus meeting space, storage space, and treatment and exam space to cater to FGCU student athletes. While that’s all included in phase one of the project, phase two includes about $2.5 million more in upgrades to the arena. When completed, that will offer an enhancement to the strength and conditioning center for athletes across more than a dozen different university sports. First opened in the early 2000s, the arena houses the FGCU volleyball and basketball programs, along with the university’s main athletic offices. The arena also commonly hosts a number of events throughout the year, from tradeshows and camps to road shows, concerts and graduation ceremonies. The arena already housed a main gym, an auxiliary gym, conference room and the campus rec department and fitness center. Additionally, Alico Arena contains an equipment room and athletic training facilities for Florida Gulf Coast University.
