5 Hikes in the Bonita Springs & Estero Area

If you’re looking for a place to get out and enjoy nature around Bonita Springs and Estero, you’re sure to find some great options. In particular, consider one of these five hiking areas.
Imperial River Loop Trail
At over a mile long, the Imperial River Loop Trail sits close to Bonita Springs. It’s open year-round for walking, hiking and fishing. The easy trail is said to be a good choice for those of all skill levels. It leads around the Imperial River and sits close to the private Imperial River Preserve.
Barefoot Beach Preserve County Park
For a stroll through some of the state’s most interesting ecosystems, consider taking Saylor Trail at Barefoot Beach Preserve. It’s common to spot shells, crabs and dolphins along the beach during the three-mile hike. You’ll also travel past an educational center.
Black Island Trail
Close to Bonita Springs, Black Island Trail is a more than two-and-a-half-mile loop. It’s popular for hiking, biking and birding, and is also open all year long. Some visitors have reported seeing birds, manatees and alligators while out on the trail. This particular trail sits within Lovers Key State Park, so you do pay an entrance fee to gain access to the trail.
Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve
With miles of trails to explore, the Estero Bay Aquatic Preserve is also a great place to get out and enjoy. As the state’s first aquatic preserve, it protects more than ten miles of islands, inlets and wildlife. A popular spot for hiking, walking, running, biking and kayaking, the trails in the preserve mark a great place to view native wildlife.
Koreshan State Historic Site
While shorter than some other nature trails, the nearly half-mile long nature trail at Koreshan State Historic Site in Estero also allows visitors to soak in some history. It’s a good place to go for a walk or a hike and view historic buildings and wildlife.
